Best African electric vehicle manufacturer company #Kiira and first African country to produce an electric vehicle is Uganda

Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) represents a significant milestone in Uganda’s industrial journey, marking the country’s ambitious entry into the automotive industry. Founded as a public enterprise, KMC aims to champion the manufacturing of environmentally friendly vehicles, a pioneering step not only for Uganda but for the East African region. Its inception is a bold statement towards innovation, sustainability, and economic transformation, putting Uganda on the global map of automotive manufacturing.



The journey of Kiira Motors started from a university project at Makerere University, Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning. The project aimed to design and develop an electric vehicle, showcasing the potential of Ugandan innovation on a global stage. This led to the birth of the Kiira EV, Africa’s first electric vehicle, which was successfully showcased in 2011. Following this milestone, Kiira Motors Corporation was established in 2014, with a clear vision to steer Uganda towards a greener automotive industry and to reduce the country’s dependency on imported vehicles. 



Kiira Motors has since expanded its product line to include not only electric vehicles but also hybrid models, demonstrating versatility and a commitment to sustainable automotive solutions. Key prototypes and models developed by Kiira Motors include 


Kiira EVS


The Kiira EVS is a 4-Seater Executive Vehicle built off the Kiira EV SMACK Platform fitted with a 2.0 Litre Petrol Engine, 5 Speed Automatic Transmission, and an exquisite Beige Interior Trim.


Kiira EV SMACK


The KIIRA EV SMACK is a 5-seater front-wheel drive sedan with a traction motor powered by a rechargeable battery bank and an internal combustion engine-based generator. It is the first Electric Hybrid Vehicle designed and built in Africa. This configuration of two power sources ensures an unlimited range and increases the efficiency of the powertrain, hence enhancing fuel economy. This innovative and iterative development programme was envisaged to realize KMC’s systems and requisite competences for the relevant and beneficial institutionalization of an automotive industry in Uganda. The vision of KMC represents the commitment of Uganda to develop indigenous solutions to her essential needs as well as being a fountain of the heritage of the Pearl of Africa.


Kiira EV


The Kiira EV is Africa’s first electric vehicle launched on 24th November 2011. It employs a simple battery electric vehicle powertrain consisting of an Energy storage bank, energy converter and an electric motor.  It is powered by electricity which is stored in the battery bank through repetitive charging.  The battery system of the Kiira EV consists of 4 battery banks of 64 lithium ion cells connected in series. The banking ensures energy system modularity for effective battery monitoring, safety, increased reliability and maintenance. The battery bank capacity of 40AH and 207V is engineered to achieve an inter-charge distance 80km.


Kayoola Solar Bus


The Kayoola Solar Bus concept represents the next generation of public transport for cities within the region. The first of its kind on the African continent, the Kayoola Solar bus relies on lithium-ion batteries to power an electric motor that is coupled to a 2-speed pneumatic shift transmission. This technology serves to conserve the environment and public health. The telltale signatures of traditional diesel engine buses – plumes of dark smoke blowing out of the tailpipe and a grumbling engine sound — are replaced by a soft whine as soon as the electric bus accelerates.


The prototype which is designed to serve as an Executive City bus, is easy for riders to spot, thanks to the pearl white color adorned by the colors of the national flag. Its uncompromising beauty, elegant design and luxurious interior space bring to mind the rich heritage of the Pearl of Africa. The pearl white body, and wide sliding windows give the Kayoola a graceful exterior, with the proprietary design grille complementing the front.


Kayoola EVS


The Kayoola EVS is a Fully Electric Low Floor Bus specifically designed for Urban Mass Transportation. At full charge, the Kayoola EVS has a range of up to 300 kilometers making it capable of seamlessly handling the daily duty cycle. With a sitting capacity of up to 90 passengers, the Kayoola EVS is positioned to offer great returns for the bus operator while enabling the reduction in congestion on the city roads.


The Kayoola EVS is fitted with state-of-the-art safety and assistive technology for people with special needs including special seats and a ramp for easy boarding and off boarding of people in wheelchairs.


The Kayoola EVS is premised to facilitate a total sustainable mass mobility solution for Urban Centers in Sub-Saharan Africa.


Kayoola Diesel Coach

The Kayoola Diesel Coach is a premium intercity bus aimed at addressing the need for a novel and innovative transportation solution that meets the demand for comfortable, long-distance mass transportation in Africa.


The Kayoola Diesel Coach is powered by a 6-cylinder turbocharged inter-cooled Cummins engine, providing over 375 horsepower, and able to achieve a top speed of 140km/hr. Passenger comfort is guaranteed through the 47 reclining leather seats, each fitted with magazine holders, swivel armrests, footrests, foldable tables, and cup holders. The passenger experience is further enhanced through the availability of overhead & leg ventilation, LED saloon & reading lights, USB Charging Points, and connectivity ensured through the onboard Wi-Fi service.


The Kayoola Diesel Coach is further fitted with an onboard toilet, a refrigerator that has a capacity of fifty-three 300ml bottles, and kneeling capabilities enabled by the Air Suspension with Electronically Controlled Air Suspension System (ECAS) to maximize comfort. 


These innovations underline Kiira Motors’ focus on leveraging technology for environmentally sustainable transportation solutions.


To realize its ambitious goals, Kiira Motors has embarked on developing a state-of-the-art vehicle manufacturing facility. Located in Jinja, Uganda, this sprawling complex is slated to be the heart of Kiira Motors’ manufacturing operations, embodying the company’s commitment to local production and skill development. The facility is not just a manufacturing hub but also a symbol of Uganda’s industrial aspirations, poised to create jobs and catalyze the development of ancillary industries, from parts manufacturing to high-tech innovation centers. 



Despite its innovative thrust, Kiira Motors faces a range of challenges. High production costs, limited access to financing, and competition from established global automotive giants are significant hurdles. Additionally, building a local and regional market for electric and hybrid vehicles amidst infrastructure and technological constraints poses its own set of challenges. However, these challenges also present opportunities for Kiira Motors to innovate and adapt, potentially leading breakthroughs in affordable electric vehicle technology and creating a new market niche in the African automotive sector.


The rise of Kiira Motors has broader implications for Uganda’s economy and society. By fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, Kiira Motors not only positions Uganda as a leader in green technology but also stimulates job creation, skills development, and technological advancement. The focus on sustainable transportation solutions further aligns with global environmental goals, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and promoting cleaner urban mobility solutions in Uganda and beyond. 


Looking ahead, Kiira Motors is poised for growth, with plans to expand its product range, scale up manufacturing, and explore export markets within Africa and globally. The company’s vision extends beyond producing vehicles to creating a comprehensive ecosystem for the automotive industry in Uganda, including a vibrant supply chain, research and development facilities, and a skilled workforce. Through strategic partnerships, continued innovation, and government support, Kiira Motors aims to transform not just Uganda’s automotive landscape but also to make a significant impact on the global stage.
